Cyberattacks: How they are changing and why they pose an ever greater risk

Cyberattacks today are no longer just the work of technically skilled lone individuals. Behind increasingly sophisticated cyber threats are complex organised groups and professional hackers who use the latest technologies, various automation tools and techniques, and artificial intelligence. Learn the main reasons why cyberattacks are becoming ever more sophisticated.

The main reasons for more sophisticated cyberattacks

Cyberattacks are not only becoming more frequent – affecting individuals, companies and various commercial and state organisations alike – they are also becoming more sophisticated. Wherever sensitive data exist, there is a potential risk of misuse. Much of that data now resides online, which is why the online space is increasingly targeted by professionals trying to obtain and exploit it.

Internet threats are thus, in a way, a natural consequence of our technological development. The main reasons why cyberattacks are becoming ever more dangerous include:

Organised groups and organised cooperation

One of the main reasons is the organised nature of cyberattacks. Attacks are carried out by experienced professional hackers who are well organised, equipped with the latest technologies and have up-to-date technical and IT knowledge.

Advanced techniques and trends

Many hackers and organised groups of cyber attackers exploit advanced methods, techniques and trends that extend not only into information technology but also into social engineering. Attackers exploit weaknesses in human psychology and use various manipulative techniques.

Activity in the online space

As mentioned above, one reason for the spread of cyberattacks is that we spend a lot of time online, which widens the range of potential targets.

Use of artificial intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence is significantly changing the way cyberattacks are created. Attackers increasingly use it to automate attacks, create convincing phishing emails and fake digital content, accounts and identities. Thanks to AI, these attacks are faster, more targeted and harder for ordinary users to recognise.

That is why it is important for both individuals and companies to keep pace with these developments. The foundation is continuous education in cybersecurity and the consistent application of protective measures that help prevent data misuse and security incidents.

The impact of cyberattacks on everyday life

The impact of increasingly frequent and sophisticated cyberattacks on ordinary people, companies and other organisations can, in practice, be divided into three basic groups:

  1. Organisations and individuals face a constantly growing number of attempts to break into their private and work environments in order to misuse their data.
  2. In response, there is an urgent need to address the protection of sensitive data comprehensively and in real time. It turns out that existing protection mechanisms quickly become outdated, and new threats must be responded to promptly.
  3. The logical result of both previous factors is increased spending by individuals and companies on security and protection against cyber threats, which are becoming ever more frequent and sophisticated.

In practice, it often turns out that outdated antivirus software or basic security measures are no longer enough against today’s threats. Attackers can bypass such protections and gain access to sensitive data. The consequence is often the misuse of personal or company data for unauthorised financial transactions, administrative complications and dealing with the aftermath, which can even involve contacting the authorities or the police. Besides financial losses, there is often a loss of trust and disruption to the normal functioning of individuals or companies.

Protection against cyberattacks

Protection against cyberattacks today is not a one-off decision but a long-term approach. It is not enough to have antivirus switched on or to use a strong password. What matters is understanding where your data are, who has access to them and how they are protected.

In practice, this means regularly asking yourself simple but essential questions:

  • Where are my personal or company data stored?
  • Who do I provide them to and why?
  • To what extent do I share them, and is it really necessary?

Continuous oversight of systems and data also plays an important role. Continuous monitoring makes it possible to detect suspicious behaviour early and respond before real problems arise. For companies and individuals alike, it is a practical way to minimise financial losses, administrative complications and loss of trust.

Ultimately, it is the combination of technical solutions and conscious handling of data that helps manage increasingly sophisticated cyber threats without unnecessary risk.

Security Operations Center: what it is and how it protects your company

A Security Operations Center, or SOC for short, is a specialised centre focused on continuous monitoring, analysis and detection of cyber threats and other security risks for organisations. A well-designed SOC effectively reduces the risk of data leaks and protects critical information in the organisation.
